The American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed of dog from the terrier group, one of the several breeds classified as pit bulls. This type of dogs are well known for their strength, loyalty, and tenacity. They are generally used for protection, livestock driving, family companions, and as catch dogs for hogs and semi-wild cattle.

Temperament:
This breed is extremely loyal, affectionate and intelligent. The American Pit Bull Terrier gets along well with older considerate children and with other dogs they have been raised with. However, they will exhibit aggression towards strange dogs and small household pets. They are exceedingly protective of their family, home and territory. They are not recommended for the novice or sedentary owner.
Care:
The American Pit Bull Terrier requires minimal care. Regular grooming with a firm bristle brush will minimize loose hair. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done only when necessary. As for the health problems, the American Pit Bull Terrier is prone to hereditary cataracts, hip dysplasia, congenital heart disease and allergies to grass.
Training:
The American Pit Bull Terrier is very obedient and eager to please. Early socialization and obedience training are essential for this breed. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training should be done with firmness, patience, and consistency. They display talents in tracking, weight pull and obedience.
Activity:
In order to keep them happy, these dogs need a large amount of exercise. The American Pit Bull Terrier loves to interact with humans and enjoys playing Frisbee in the yard. They will do well even in an apartment provided they are given sufficient attention and exercise.
