Coat:

The Basenji has a very short coat, that doesn't require special grooming. This dog tends to clean himself making the coat very easy to care for and relatively clean. The hair is short, fine and somewhat harsh. This breed sheds very little and has no odor.

Overview:

The Basenji(pronounced Buh-SEN-jee) originated in Africa and was mainly used for hunting purposes. The Basenji is a sight hound, hunting by sight only. They have very strong hunting instincts that make them chase after who knows what. The Basenjis are not barkers, actually they don't bark at all, however they have a distinct yodel and wail when they are excited or when hunting.

Charcater:

The Basenji is a very intelligent yet independent breed. This dog can be a very lovely family pet, due to its playful and active nature. This breed loves being outdoors and does best with an open large space.

Temperament:

The Basenji is a very alert and fun loving breed, however is not recommended for an inexperienced owner. If left alone for long periods of time this breed has the tendency to become destructive. However Basenjis can be very patient and good with children, however should be socialized from an early age in order to prevent fight tendencies with other dogs.

Care:

The Basenji requires minimal care because it is a very clean dog that can easily take care of himself. Although this breed doesn't shed much, the Basenji requires some grooming if the coat is to look its best. An occasional brushing with a firm bristle or wire brush works best should be sufficient.

Training:

Socialization should be done at an early age in order to prevent any destruction problems and to ensure that the dog will do well around children and other animals. Obedience training is a must for this energetic and very alert breed. Due to the fact that this breed tends to get bored quickly a variety of training methods should be used. Variety, consistency and firm handling work best with the Basenji.

Activity:

Being an active dog, the Basenji requires a lot of exercise and long daily walks are a must. Being a hunter this breed does best within a fenced yard. Be sure that the fence is deeply planted into the ground and rather high in order to prevent the dog to escape.
